Lincoln Hall 1955-2012
Andrew Brash & Lincoln Hall

Lincoln Hall, my friend for life, tragically passed away on March 20th in Sydney, Australia of mesothelioma, a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.

Lincoln was a special and dear person and was treasured by those who knew him. Considering his close encounter with death in 2006, this now seems all the more cruel and tragic that he has been taken from us in this way. I know Lincoln was very grateful to be able to continue his life and that it was full of joy since his return home from Everest. From speaking to his family and friends I know he had many future plans for his life and was distraught it was being cut short, although his wife Barbara told me he never once complained “why me?” It pains me immensely that he was forced to leave this life so soon. The loss of his warmth, intelligence, humour and charismatic presence leaves a gaping hole in many people’s lives. I had expected to know Lincoln for many, many years to come. I also intended to visit Lincoln in Australia with my family. Regretfully this never did happen and my first visit to Australia has instead been to attend Lincoln’s funeral. It was a beautiful, but immensely sad service, with many of his family and friends in attendance and was presided over by a Buddhist Lama. I know Lincoln would have been pleased as he was a practising Tibetan Buddhist. Meeting his wife Barbara, and sons Dylan and Dorje brought some comfort and I can’t thank them enough for their generosity and kindness.

Considering what a huge part of my life Lincoln has become since 2006, this for me is a completely devastating turn of events. I feel as though I’ve lost a part of myself and will miss Lincoln for the rest of my days.
